Land Theme
Graduate opportunities in the Land theme may include site survey work, helping to prepare contract documentation and liaising with clients over community-led land projects.
Practical conservation and habitat management includes hands-on experience in practical woodland management skills.
Canal development work maximises opportunities for the regeneration of the Black Country’s waterways through our partnership with British Waterways
Post graduate opportunities exist for recent graduates in Landscape Architecture/ Design. Such a placement would include supporting and contributing to the design, management and implementation of landscape design projects.
Environmental Business Services
This placement area enables suitable candidates to gain experience in assisting businesses to reduce their environmental impact and increase profitability.
The Environmental Business Service team delivers a variety of support for businesses and other organisations in the Black Country. This includes the delivery of training on topics such practical environmental management, waste minimisation and environmental auditing, together with onsite support for environmental management system implementation, waste auditing and assistance with legislative compliance.
Communities Theme
For graduates who want to gain experience of working alongside communities to empower them to shape their local communities and improve their environment. Placements are available alongside experienced community workers who currently carry out a diverse range of activities across the Black Country including the following:
Supporting communities to get involved in enhancing local quality of life.
- Stakeholder consultation around green spaces
- Supporting group development
- Delivering accredited training
- Supporting volunteers
- Raising environmental awareness
Education Theme
Education placements include helping to prepare lesson plans and deliver sessions for environmental education such as
- Sustainable Development Days where secondary school pupils consider the impact of climate change and get involved in activities based on environmental issues such as waste
- Family events that encourage participants to engage with the outdoor environment for recreation and learning
- Forest Schools activities for primary schools
Graduates also are provided with opportunities to develop resources for schools and teachers and also to apply for funding to carry out projects such as school grounds improvements and education programme delivery.
Youth
Placements include working alongside experienced and qualified youth workers who use the environment as a tool to raise the aspirations and confidence of young people who live in the West Midlands. Completing a placement within this theme means you will work with young people on personal development, group activities and healthy lifestyle activities.
Training
For graduates that would like experience within the Land and Training teams, placements can range from assisting in the recruitment of the Land Apprentices programme to helping with the pricing of tender specifications under the guidance of the contracts manager. This is a varied and rewarding opportunity for those interested in developing an understanding of delivering land projects with trainees.
Graduate Green Team
This team placement offers the opportunity to gain skills in practical habitat conservation and biodiversity projects. Candidates may have an interest in ecological survey work or may want to gain experience in event management or team building skills.
The focus of this placement is at the Wolverhampton Environment Centre which has a mosaic of habitats, training facilities including glasshouses and links to the Smestow Valley and the canal corridor.
